Welcome to the website of
St Margaret’s Chapel Guild
The Chapel is set within Edinburgh Castle and holds the honour of being Edinburgh’s oldest building. St Margaret’s Chapel is still used for religious services.
The St Margaret’s Chapel Guild exists to provide information about the small Chapel within Edinburgh Castle, dedicated to St. Margaret, Queen of Scotland. Our Guild looks after the Chapel in partnership with Historic Environment Scotland. For members of the Guild there is a section, accessed by a password, which keeps them up to date with the Guild’s activities.

Fresh Flowers Twice a Week
Fresh flowers are placed in the Chapel every week throughout the year by members of the Guild, all of whom have the name Margaret (or a derivative of, for example: Maggie, Megan, Peggie or Daisy) as their first or a subsequent name. As it is difficult to cover all variations of Margaret here, we welcome enquiries from all communities. Although the Chapel as part of Edinburgh Castle is owned by Historic Scotland, the Guild has responsibility for the altar frontals, vases, kneelers and benches. We also provide a booklet for visitors who are interested in finding out more about the Chapel and its fascinating history. Copies of this are available online or are offered free within the Chapel itself.
If you think you are eligible to join our Guild and have Margaret, or a derivation of it, in your name, you can contact our membership secretary to find out how to join. We also welcome membership from interested organisations.
Our Guild is a charity. In addition to our responsibility for the maintenance of the furnishings of the Chapel and placing flowers, we also make donations to a range of charities whose works operate in the spirit of St Margaret. If you would like to make a donation you can access our Just Giving page HERE
We are always hugely grateful for support.
Our Patron
The first Patron of the Guild was HRH Princess Margaret. On her death in 2002, HRH The Princess Royal became Patron. The Patron keeps in touch regularly with the Guild and its activities and visited the Guild most recently on St Margaret’s Day 2023.
Weddings
The Castle allows some weddings and christenings to take place in the Chapel each year and while some of these are from families of Guild members, you can also put in a request. If you are interested in booking a wedding or christening, please contact our Convenor, Hazel Dunn, here
